No true absinthe fan would ever light their drink on fire. It ruins the flavor. The fire ritual was invented by the Czechs to make their absinthe more attractive, as Czech absinthe is notoriously bad and you can't hurt the taste. The only way to drink absinthe is to pour a shot in a glass and then slowly pour ice water over a sugar cube into the absinthe - no fire!
